A large part of the examination is finding out what the patient is experiencing and determining the type of dry eye causing the symptoms. We examine the surface of the eye under a microscope to look at the quantity and the quality of the tear film. Additionally, we examine the eyelids and the glands inside the eyelids to insure they are healthy.
There are a wide range of treatments ranging from over the counter products to specialty laser procedures. Many times using artificial tears and vitamin supplements can help boost the tear film. There are prescription eye drops that can aid in tear production as well as laser procedures for patients with more advanced dry eye.
Of course – stay hydrated and making sure you consume enough water each day. Additionally, take breaks from your computer and smart phone. I recommend the 20/20/20 Rule – take a 20 second break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away and blink your eyes. Finally, wearing sunglasses is critical to protecting the surface of the eye and the eyelids from UV exposure.

I’ve been going here the last five years. Doctor G. is awesome. She takes her time to walk through her findings with me, and explain exactly what’s going on. Even when the appointment is over she makes sure to let me know I can call or email any time if I have questions. I also feel very confident in her work. She is thorough in her testing, and my eyeglass prescriptions are always spot on. I previously had only been in for yearly appointments and new prescriptions, but lately I’ve been having some vision issues outside the norm, and she knew right away what could be causing it. The front desk staff are also awesome. They are friendly and knowledgeable, if Doctor G is with another patient I feel comfortable asking them questions and they have always been able to get me the answers.
I have been going to Eyemax Eyecare for years. Dr. Martin was strongly recommended by a friend. Previous to seeing him, I had frustrating experiences with a previous optometrist. Dr. Martin took great care of me right away, and cured a pretty bad developing eye infection! In the years since, Dr. Martin and the whole team at Eyemax have always provided excellent care, along with excellent communication! I always have options for care explained to me, and the reasons for those options. For anyone living in or around Murray and Salt Lake City, I highly recommend Dr. Martin!
